The Department of Natural Resources Parks & Recreation Division (DNR-PRD) is developing General Management Plans (GMPs). GMPs are long-range planning documents that depict a park’s importance in terms of natural resources, historic resources, recreational and educational opportunities, and economic value. A key aspect of a GMP is the Management Zone Plan, which reflects the land preservation goals and recreation programming for different areas within each park. Management Zones are developed based upon input from DNR experts, key stakeholders and the community.

The development of General Management Plans begins with the assembly of a Planning Team from various specialists within the DNR. The Planning Team typically includes the Park Managers, Conservation Officer, District Park Planner, District Supervisor, and Recreation Division Management Plan Administrator. In addition, the Stewardship Unit participates through its Manager, Ecologist, Ecological Restoration Specialist, and Cultural Specialist.

Phase I GMP - Port Crescent & Sleeper State Parks

Sleeper State Park and Port Crescent State Park are located in the thumb of Michigan, on Lake Huron. Although Birchler Arroyo Associates did not assisting the DNR with the management plan for Sanilac Petroglyphs Historic State Park, its proximity to Sleeper and Port Crescent makes it a natural addition to the planning process.

This project has been completed and approved. Final versions of the Management Plans are available for review:
